Deanna Van der Velde was born in Newcastle upon Tyne of refugee parents. Her mother left Berlin as a 17 year old, a few weeks after Kristallnacht, supported by her sister and brother in law who were already in Newcastle. Her father came with his brothers from Warsaw in 1938 and set up a paper making factory in Team valley. The industrial estate was just being set up and the machinery was transported by ship from Danzig.
She is the chair of the North East branch of the council of Christians and Jews and a Director of Newcastle Council of Faiths, as well as the volunteer outreach worker for the United Hebrew Congregation of Newcastle upon Tyne.
Since the inception of Holocaust Memorial Day, Deanna has helped to organise various commemorations and is passionate that the Holocaust should never be forgotten.
