About this Event

About the Talk

How do communities hold on to histories that others have tried to erase? Fulbright scholar Paula Fernandes Silva explores this question across two places linked by the African diaspora: Rio de Janeiro and Savannah.

In Brazil, her doctoral research centers on the Nosso Sagrado Collection, a group of Afro-Brazilian sacred objects seized by police during decades of religious persecution in Rio de Janeiro, and the ongoing work of memory and historical reparation surrounding them. In Georgia, her research turns to African American heritage in Savannah, including the legacy of W. W. Law and the role Black communities have played in preserving and reshaping the city's public memory.

Drawing on the field of Black Geographies, Paula will share how Black communities in both places have used heritage, archives, and place to challenge historical erasure and create new narratives about the past.
