Fula Brothers, featuring Mamadou Sidibe and Walter Strauss, celebrate joy and magic at the musical crossroads of West Africa and America.
When Malian kamale ngoni player Mamadou Sidibe and American guitarist Walter Strauss join in an interplay of West African hunter's harp and finger-style guitar, the result is a deep, soulful music that is simultaneously ancient and fresh. Fula Brothers create a joyful and intoxicating sound through intertwining melodic grooves, spirited improvisation, and songs in two languages. Mamadou and Walter are each known as innovators on their instruments and have performed in the States, UK, Europe, and West Africa. Their grooves will be elevated exquisitely by ace percussionist-drummer Brian Rice.
Mamadou played a groundbreaking role in transforming the popular Wassoulou music of Mali. He was the first to break with tradition by taking the ancient hunters harp outside the hunters' ceremonies, creating the now widely used kamale ngoni. Mamadou is a master musician and improvisor, and a joy from head to toe.
“… the same sensibility that you’ll find in Muddy Waters: music as a tool for the re-creation of everyday life into something special, even magical.” – Stylus
Walter’s playing draws on great guitar traditions, but what makes him utterly unique is how he has creatively engaged and woven the influence of other global instruments (kora, ngoni, sitar…) into his innovative guitar style. He's brought a singular voice to international collaborations with some of the great musicians of Mali, Cuba, and Scotland.
“… a joyous, ebullient chorus of guitar voices… he has managed to elevate the instrument and the genre on the whole.” – Acoustic Guitar Magazine
