FUGU DUGU is a female-led Eastern European gypsy punk rock band inspired by the fields of Moldova, the mountains of Romania, railroads of Ukraine and Russia, with a touch of Klezmer and Americana.
Born in Chicago in 2017 and conceptualized by Grammy-winning violinist and lead singer Olya Prohorova and Chicago singer-songwriter Mark Adkison, FUGU DUGU has been performing a combination of original and timeless Eastern European songs across the Midwest. With its style deeply rooted in the folk traditions of Eastern European melodies, FUGU DUGU songs are sung in three languages - Romanian, Russian and English. In 2023 the band played together with the "God Father of Ukrainian rock music" Oleg Skrypka who called Olya "a genius violinist"
Originally a duo, in 2021 Olya Prohorova and Mark Adkison expanded the band by adding bass and drums. Shortly after, they began production of a 9 track full-length album to be released in Spring of 2024. Also in 2024 the band plays at the major world music festival Jetlag
“Lunatic Parade” is FUGU DUGU’s long-awaited debut album. This is an internationally inspired collection of songs in English, Russian and Romanian, and are performed with the flavor of post-apocalyptic gutter folk. Lunatic Parade is proudly recorded at DZ Studios in Chicago and features a collaboration of gypsy cowboy Bucky Wanko, and Madam Broshkina.
FUGU DUGU is often referred to as "female Gogol Bordello." Drawing inspiration from Eastern European gypsy melodies, Americana and Klezmer, with sprinkles of classical music, "Lunatic Parade" has an unabashed intent to inspire the listener to be free and true to oneself, and to allow the same for others. This is music to be played at both the beginning and end of the world.
Last Lunatic will be officially presented to Chicago public in May
