A two day Conference exploring the technical, economic and policy challenges of realising the potential of minewater heat.
About this Event

Summary

It has been estimated that there is enough heat within the UK’s coalfields to meet the demands of all the buildings that lie over them.

It could therefore particularly benefit economically disadvantaged former mining communities. The GEMS project was funded in 2021 to explore the technical, economic and societal challenges in developing minewater heat as a resource to decrabonise our heating systems.

Background

The project combines novel simulation tools, innovative heat storage solutions, thorough evaluation of the governance and economic landscape, and community participation, this interdisciplinary project will provide integrated solutions, from initial heat extraction to the end user, for maximising mine water geothermal heat energy.

The Workshop

This two day workshop will bring together stakeholders with different roles and perspectives on the future of geothermal heat from minewater

It is an opportunity to report on research from the project, test findings and develop policy recommendations to support the potential opportunities for this renewable heat. There will be representatives from Government, industry, research institutes, local authorities, policy makers, consumer groups, sector representatives and the energy suppliers.

The Conference will include presentations and discussion, with plenty of time for networking and feedback.

Speakers:

Outputs from the Conference will include:

Outputs from the Conference will be

1. Networking across the industry

2. A collation and publication of all the relevant current research

3. A roadmap to Geothermal Heating

4.An understanding of the research, policy and investment gaps

A written summary of the workshop will be sent to all participants. The outputs will be used to develop future projects
