About this Event
Get Hands-On with Oyster Rag Pots!
Oyster Rag Pots are a clever invention from Oyster River Ecology (ORE) — a simple, scalable, and cost-effective way to restore oyster habitats across the Manatee River. They’re the ultimate mix of science, sustainability, and a little bit of craftiness!
Here’s how it works: volunteers (that’s you!) mix cement with a cotton rag, shape it over a wooden spacer, and let it dry with an anchor pin. These handmade “rag pots” are then installed by ORE in the river, where baby oysters naturally attach and grow into thriving reefs. Each pot can host around 320 oysters that together filter over 1,500 gallons of water a day — helping clean and restore our local waters while providing vital habitat for fish and other marine life.
It’s serious ecological restoration disguised as a fun craft project! Come roll up your sleeves, get a little messy, and do something great for the Manatee River.
