About the Presenters

Topic: Delegated Design of Connections Using Finite Element Analysis

Presenter: Aurelio Silva

Aurelio Silva, MEng, Regional Engineer at IDEA StatiCa, presents on "Delegated Design of Connections Using Finite Element Analysis." He explores the concept of delegated connection design and delves into the three options provided by the AISC 303-22 Code of Standard Practice and 360-22 Specification for Structural Steel Buildings.

The presentation examines current practices in connection design, ranging from traditional methods such as using AISC tables, hand calculations, and Excel spreadsheets, to modern approaches like BIM/detailing software and connection design software. It underscores the numerous benefits of employing FEA for connection design, including enhanced design flexibility, significant time savings, and material efficiency.

A pivotal highlight is the introduction of the Component-Based Finite Element Method (CBFEM), which revolutionizes traditional component method design guides by overcoming geometric limitations. Through design examples, the presentation vividly illustrates how FEA can be applied in connection design ensuring compliance with AISC requirements.

Overall, the presentation underscores the transformative impact of FEA in connection design, emphasizing its potential to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and integration with BIM workflows.
