Ramona and the Holy Smokes: Based in Central Virginia and with family roots in South Texas, Ramona and the Holy Smokes represent a new generation of honky tonk music. With powerful female vocals that cover an emotional range from determined to comic to vulnerable, and a talented backing band steeped in classic country and western styles of the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s, the band exhibits a “clarity and sincerity that bring Patsy Cline to mind” (Nashville Scene, 2025). Fronted by Ramona Martinez, whose songwriting has earned her recognition from Wide Open Country as one of the "15 Latino Artists Shaping Country Music," this Charlottesville, Virginia-based band is rooted in the traditional sounds of country music but unafraid of pushing boundaries and highlighting the connections across border cultures. Their self-produced debut album, Ramona and the Holy Smokes, a collection of original songs about heartache and resiliency, was released on September 26.
Brandon Wayne & His Lonesome Drifters: This powerhouse quartet is a modern-day blast from the past. Their shows are a smoking hot mix of Brandon Wayne's superb originals and choice covers in the style of early to mid-20th century classic vintage country, rockabilly, hillbilly boogie and western swing along with original surf instrumentals. Wayne’s gorgeous salty-sweet twang has echoes of George Jones meets Hank Williams, and it is truly one of the finest hillbilly voices on the scene today. With the three additional Southern gents who make up the band--Charles “King” Arthur, Nick “Powers” Schrenk and Matias Camino—their sound has the Virginia bloodlines of familiar idols such as Gene Vincent and Link Wray. It’s living proof that far from being a worn, nostalgic cliché, this music is alive and kicking. When people get a taste of it, they realize they’ve fallen into something that’s pure fun and rockin’ joy. Not everyone knows rockabilly, but everyone loves it once they hear it. If this music doesn’t get you up and dancing, check your pulse!
