Fruit Machine is an original physical theatre performance created and directed by New Brunswick theatre artist Alex Rioux in partnership with Solo Chicken Productions. This groundbreaking production uses movement, projection, and historical text to interpret and investigate the horrific practices of the RCMP and Canadian Military that targeted the 2SLGBTQIA+ community from the 50’s through to the 90’s. Fruit Machine gets its title from the non-functional device of the same name developed by Frank Robert Wake that attempted to use pupil dilation as proof of a man’s homosexuality.
Created with a primarily queer ensemble and creative team, Fruit Machine shines a light on the barbaric practices and the unfair treatment of queer individuals in Canadian history and creates space for 2SLGBTQIA+ artists to take ownership of their history, and their stories.

Fruit Machine est une pièce de théâtre originale créée et mise en scène par l’artiste de théâtre néo-brunswickois Alex Rioux, en partenariat avec Solo Chicken Productions. Cette production révolutionnaire utilise le mouvement, la projection et le texte historique pour interpréter et enquêter sur les pratiques horribles de la GRC et de l’armée canadienne qui ont ciblé la communauté 2ELGBTQIA+ des années 50 aux années 90. Fruit Machine tire son titre de l’appareil non fonctionnel du même nom mis au point par Frank Robert Wake, qui tentait d’utiliser la dilatation des pupilles comme preuve d’homosexualité.
Créé avec un ensemble et une équipe créative principalement queer, Fruit Machine met en lumière les pratiques barbares et le traitement injuste des personnes queer dans l’histoire du Canada et crée un espace pour que les artistes 2ELGBTQIA+ s’approprient leur histoire et leurs récits.
