About this Event

Freedom Summer Series: From Plantations to Prisons

To create the future we want, we believe that we need to reckon with the past and tell truths about where we are right now. Please join us for From Plantations to Prisons, Part I of our Freedom Summer series. Our first teach-in will focus on the history of racial violence in the U.S. with an emphasis on justice and freedom, and our live music will be all about healing, joy, and love.

Whether you are leading with lived experience or this is your first time engaging with these ideas, you are welcome to participate in this engaged learning series.

Our music and events are rooted in principles of community, love, kindness, and justice. Frontyard FM believes in the abolition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), of prisons, and of all systems of oppression around the world.

partners with individuals impacted by structural violence to create artistic works, collective healing spaces, and advocacy initiatives that drive narrative and systemic change.

The Healing Project Choir is a growing village of singers and musicians using song as a tool for truth-telling, healing, and liberation. Founded and directed by composer Samora Pinderhughes, and rooted in the traditions of Sweet Honey in the Rock, the AACM, and the Nueva Canción movement, we use collective singing and vulnerable lyricism to hold space for community, truth, and transformation. We invite people to experience what freedom sounds like and feel their way into a more compassionate world.

Freedom Classrooms is a nonprofit organization born out of partnerships with Harvard University facilitating educational experiences in jails and prisons across the nation. Whether we are offering courses on Music & Justice (Nashua Street J*il in MA), Patriarchy (San Quentin Pr*son in CA), or workshops on trauma and healing (in the DC J*il), our commitment to education centers on justice, art, and freedom. Together, our team has decades of experience in carceral education while our collective work as Freedom Classrooms is new and evolving.
