Description:
Tadasana is a preparation for Sirsasana.
You don't need to be strong to be strong, you need to be balanced to be strong.
With this in mind, Karin is offering a suite of workshops focusing on the feet on day one, and on inversions on day two. They can each be taken alone or separately but we encourage you to attend both days if possible so you can take advantage of the progression.
Day One - The Feet
In this workshop, as well as focusing on the foot and its asymmetries and its injuries, I will bring out the importance of the foot as “a thing in itself.” The foot plays a crucial role in the Iyengar method as an instrument of precision and beauty, and simultaneously it serves as a powerful foundation for the art and elegance of the yoga asana. This workshop will link our understanding of our feet with general principals such as alignment, gravity, proprioception, and the formalistic aspects of the Iyengar method. Through observing our own feet and
recognizing their uniqueness, we will begin to explore ways to further develop our
understanding and execution of our yoga asanas, notably standing poses, balancing poses and forward bends.
Day Two - Inversions
The goal of this workshop is to transform our thinking about inversions, both as practitioners and teachers, so that inversions do not stand alone, but are a natural extension of the sequences that lead up to them. For many students the idea of inversions creates a labyrinth of confusion and fear. When we create intelligent sequencing building towards our inversions, this process becomes the “Ariadne’s thread” that keeps us on the right path, and Tadasana provides a steady anchor. Every time we attempt a pose in a sequence leading towards any type of inversion, Tadasana serves to ground us and keep us moving in a logically and kinesthetically sound direction.
We will work on headstand, shoulder stand, handstand and forearm balance, each of which will have its own preparatory sequences. Every student will move forward in a specific way based on what their body can or can’t do, remembering that “the way there is also there.”
About Your Teacher:
Karin Stephan is a leading Iyengar yoga teacher in the United States with a career that has spanned more than 45 years. As a student of Mr. Iyengar's since 1972 and a certified Iyengar teacher, Karin incorporates his insights and acute sense of observation into her yoga practice and teaching on a daily basis. Karin first met Mr. Iyengar on a visit to Pune, India in 1969. Mr. Iyengar's focus on yoga as 'precision in action' complemented her interest in structure and aesthetics, a theme which runs throughout her teaching. In 1985, she co-founded The B.K.S.
