“I was inclined by my genius from childhood to the love of antiquities, and my Fate dropt me in a countrey most suitable for such enquiries.” So wrote John Aubrey, the 17th century antiquarian who lived in Broad Chalke, and understood full well how lucky he was to have a city like Salisbury on his doorstep, and all the many wonders that surrounded it.
