DEVONPORT YACHT CLUB - SEATALKS- HOSTED BY RTH
Yachties, ocean explorers, and environmental stewards, here’s a chance to dive into the remarkable research of Dr Laura Jordan-Smith, a marine biologist whose career spans continents, ecosystems, and countless underwater discoveries.
After relocating to Auckland (Narrow Neck) in 2019, Laura has continued to push the boundaries of what we know about ocean life, from the sensory systems of sharks and stingrays to the ecological dynamics affecting our coastlines and sea creatures in New Zealand. With a career that stretches across the Pacific and Atlantic, Laura’s work has involved collaborating with New Zealand's NIWA. Her recent work includes mapping out the stressors on marine ecosystems around New Zealand.
For sailors and sea-lovers, these projects are especially relevant, as they reveal the interconnectedness of marine health and the practices that sustain or endanger it, including the discard survivorship (are fish likely to survive when thrown back into the sea).
Join us as Laura shares insights from her research, spotlighting what it means to balance exploration, conservation, and education in a world where marine ecosystems are constantly evolving.
All are welcome - visitors please sign in at the door. The club bar will be open from 4.30pm.
We look forward to seeing you there!
