We often define ourselves by what we do. When we meet someone new, we usually proceed from pleasant ‘hellos’ to ‘and what do you do?’ But what happens if we lose our jobs or come to retirement? We’ve lost our role – now, what about our soul?I am borrowing this theme from Connie Zweig, who wrote the challenging book ‘The Inner Work of Age: Shifting from Role to Soul’ (Park Street Press, Rochester, Vermont (www.ParkStPress.com). The author challenges us to look at our lives from a deeper, spiritual perspective, reviewing spiritual practices from a variety of traditions. In doing so, we will discover deeper elements of our own lives that have remained hidden or undervalued. We are much more than what we do!
Note: This is not a book study, but it would be helpful for participants to have a copy for reference and continuing practice. While the emphasis is largely on the change of life from work to retirement, those much younger will find value in making adjustments that can deepen and enrich their lives in the present tense.
Our weekends consist of full group gatherings with sharing, music, and break-out groups. There is time for personal reading/prayer and journalling, plus periods to enjoy the beauty of Bethlehem and walks along the lakeshore.
We are enriched by friendship, shared trust, and opening ourselves to God’s joy in creation, community, and our spiritual growth.
Feel free to write or call for more information!
Newcomers are welcome! It is a serious topic, but these men also know how to have fun!
