From Resistance to Memory: LGBTQI+ Struggles in Turkey
About this Event
An activity exploring the history of the LGBTIQ+ movement in Turkey, with a special focus on the last fifteen years and the ongoing struggles, achievements, and forms of resistance within an increasingly repressive political context.
The session will begin with an introduction to the trajectory of the Turkish LGBTIQ+ movement by activist Alev Aydoğan, delivered in Turkish with consecutive interpretation into English. This will be followed by the screening of Memorylike: QueerFest's Oral History, a documentary that preserves the history of Turkey’s first and only queer film festival through the voices and memories of those who made it possible.
The activity will conclude with an open discussion featuring the film’s co-director, Asya Leman, a visual artist, filmmaker, and editor, who will share her experience and reflect on the importance of preserving collective memory within LGBTIQ+ struggles.
