About this Event

With bring and share lunch

Global Justice Now's national gathering takes place in Nottingham this year - a long distance to travel. So for those who aren't going down to England for what will be an excellent conference, we have the next best thing: we are livestreaming the opening plenary and will be watching it and discussing it together at Augustine Church in Edinburgh.

Afterwards, Sandy Winterbottom from the writers' collective Paperboats will run a workshop on the Fossil Fuel Treaty, which will include the activity of writing letters to the Scottish government about the proposed treaty, and turning them into origami paperboats.

About the opening plenary of the national gathering

This year our national gathering is titled 'From Plunder to Solidarity: the ecological crisis of capitalism and its alternatives'. The opening session will feature Ulrich Brand, co-author of 'The imperial mode of living' . Together with an international panel of speakers, he will discuss how transforming the global economy and weaning ourselves from our dependency on fossil fuels must also challenge our neo-colonialist attitudes to global resource use. The panel will discuss together how we can move from a society based on plunder, to one based on solidarity.

About the Paperboats workshop on the fossil fuel treaty

For those who know little about our campaign calling on the First Minister to endorse an international fossil fuel treaty, this is a chance to find out more. For those who are thinking about talking to their local communities or holding a stall over the summer about the treaty, this is a chance to think about how we might use letter writing and paper boat making in communicating the campaign to others.
