The Hermitage’s collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art owes much to early 20th-century Russian collectors like Sergei Shchukin and Ivan Morozov, who passionately acquired works by contemporary French artists. Their collections, featuring masterpieces by Monet, Matisse, and Picasso, were nationalized following the Russian Revolution and eventually became integral to the Hermitage Museum’s holdings. Inside the General Staff Building, visitors can marvel at iconic works such as Degas’s evocative depictions of ballet dancers and Monet’s atmospheric landscapes, which capture the fleeting play of light and color. These artworks not only highlight the artistic innovations of their time but also reflect the cultural currents that brought them to the heart of the Russian Empire.

The General Staff Building of the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg serves as a stunning extension of the museum, showcasing a world-renowned collection of 19th- and 20th-century European art. Designed by Carlo Rossi in the early 19th century, the building originally functioned as the military headquarters of the Russian Empire. Its neoclassical architecture, featuring a grand façade and triumphal arch, stands as a powerful symbol of imperial Russia, complementing the historic Winter Palace across Palace Square.
