This is an event by Concordia University’s Office of Community Engagement, under the University of the Streets Café Program.
The event is a public bilingual conversation that is free and open to participants of all ages, backgrounds and levels of education.
Event title: From labour to rage to rest: How can rest be mobilized as a liberatory practice?
Date and time: Tuesday, April 21, 2026 | 7:00-9:00 pm
Event description: This public conversation is organized in collaboration with the Leonard & Bina Ellen Art Gallery and echoes the themes of the upcoming exhibition Labour, which examines the invisible work of the colonized.
Drawing from Tricia Hersey’s book Rest as Resistance: A Manifesto, this conversation will explore the meaning and function of rest for Indigenous and Black folks. We will reflect on how rest challenges systems that prioritize productivity in service of capitalism over well-being and consider its role in reclaiming time, space, and dignity.
Together, we will ask: can rest become a collective strategy for healing and liberation? How do cultural traditions and ancestral practices inform our understanding of rest today? This conversation will invite participants to share stories, insights, and practices that honor rest as a radical act of care and resistance.
Guests: Kathleen Charles, Katsitsanoron Dumoulin-Bush
Moderator: Prakash Krishnan
