From Ground Zero – Film screening and fundraiser

Shut It Down for Palestine and Artists Against Apartheid present a special advance screening of From Ground Zero: Untold Stories from Gaza, an anthology of 22 short films from Gazan filmmakers shot during the last year. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion with NY-based Palestinian filmmakers to reflect on the film and the arduous process of creating art in the midst of a genocide.

From Ground Zero was coordinated by renowned Palestinian director Rashid Masharawi to capture the diverse experiences of life in the Palestinian enclave, including the challenges, tragedies, and moments of resilience faced by its people. Using a mix of genres including fiction, documentary, docu-fiction, animation, and experimental cinema, From Ground Zero presents a rich array of stories that reflect the sorrow, joy, and hope inherent in Gazan life.

The film has overcome repression in Europe, police raids on screenings in the West Bank, and a blanket ban across Israel to enjoy remarkable success at film festivals, including a nomination for the 2025 Academy Award for Best International Film. The NYC screening offers a rare chance to see this film with an accompanying discussion by a panel of Palestinian filmmakers.

All proceeds from ticket sales will be split between the Middle East Children’s Alliance, an aid organization doing lifesaving work on the ground in Gaza, and Watermelon Pictures, a production company working to highlight progressive Palestinian filmmaking.

Tickets are priced at $20, with $5 concession tickets available for those who cannot afford the full price and $30 supporter tickets for those with more to give. Further options for donations will be available at the event.
