Join Stephanie Beilke (Audubon Great Lakes) and Leo Gaskins (University of Chicago/Audubon Great Lakes) as they guide you through the captivating world of wetlands. Discover how muskrats are vital to bird diversity by transforming wetlands with their dens. As marsh bird populations face challenges across the Great Lakes, we'll explore whether adopting the muskrat's natural techniques can provide a lifeline for these feathered inhabitants. As Senior Manager, Conservation Science at Audubon Great Lakes, Stephanie Beilke leads marsh bird monitoring projects to inform coastal wetland restoration across the Great Lakes states while engaging community scientists and building collaborative partnerships. Stephanie has a B.S. degree from the University of Wisconsin - Madison and an M.S. degree from the University of Wisconsin – Green Bay and is currently based in Milwaukee, WI.
Dr. Leo Chan Gaskins is a community ecologist, David H. Smith Conservation Research Fellow at University of Chicago, and research partner with Audubon Great Lakes. He investigates how organisms impact the diversity, structure and function of wetlands through both consumptive and ecosystem engineering pathways, and how to harness these effects to inform future conservation and restoration efforts. He is a former NSF Graduate Research Fellow and earned his PhD from Duke University.
