About this Event

One of the most striking traits of "recovered voices" composers (those who were persecuted and/or murdered by the Nazi Regime,) is how progressive they were. As avant- garde as these composers could be, they were equally attuned to the current popular music filling cabaret and jazz clubs, not to mention the rich cantorial and folk idioms of their upbringing. With this wealth of palettes to draw from, those with popular music leanings were constantly developing their craft, resulting in direct, accessible music that ranges from snappy to soulful. Impressive pianists as well, these composers use the instrument as if pianist and piano are partnering beautifully, whether on the dance floor or concert hall. Three composers that exemplify this blend of dance and concert hall are Wilhelm Grosz, Erwin Schulhoff and Viktor Ullmann. Featuring Pianist Jeanne Golan.
