The Ice House Museum is very fortunate to host Aaron Gates, Site Manager of San Augustine’s Mission Dolores State Historic Site (founded in 1721) on FRIDAY, May 8, at 6:00PM. Explore how East Texas History and Civil War battles in Louisiana and Arkansas were connected. This Program links the famous El Camino Real de los Tejas--passing through the 18th century Spanish Mission site-to events a century later during the Civil War’s Red River Campaign.Additionally, the presentation considers Southeast Texas locations associated with the Opelousas and Atascosito Roads that passed near the areas, as well as the Spanish mission and presidio that were founded near Anahuac/ Wallisville.
This presentation culminates in the Battle of Jenkins’ Ferry, fought April 30, 1864 on the Saline River in Arkansas, during the Red River Campaign--the final campaign that would determine whether the United States could gain a strong foothold in the interior of Confederate Texas.
