From ART to art #3 How to Look at Modern Art

How do we look at modern art? What gives an artwork meaning—and why can two people stand before the same work and experience it completely differently?

Join us for From ART to art, a completely free, independent and conversational walk through Tate Modern’s permanent collection.

In a small group of six, we will encounter approximately 10–12 works and explore them through history, sociology and psychology. We will consider the world in which each work was created, what it might tell us about society and identity, and the thoughts or emotions it may provoke in us today.

This is a conversation, not a lecture. No previous knowledge of art is required, and there are no correct answers. Curiosity, questions and different interpretations are warmly encouraged.

THE EVENING

6:45 pm — Meet inside the Turbine Hall
7:00 pm — The art walk begins
8:00 pm — The formal walk finishes

Afterwards, anyone who wishes may stay for alcoholic or non-alcoholic drinks and further conversation while enjoying Tate Modern Lates. Drinks are optional and purchased individually.

WHY “FROM ART TO ART”?

By day, your host, Orestis, works in ART—assisted reproductive technology. Outside medicine, he is an independent art enthusiast who spends much of his free time visiting galleries, reading about artists and discussing art. From ART to art brings these two parts of his life together, although the walk itself is entirely about art.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION

• Attendance is completely free of charge.
• Only six places are available.
• Each attendee must reserve their own place.
• The walk takes place within Tate Modern’s free permanent collection.
• Please arrive by 6:45 pm so that we can begin promptly at 7:00 pm.
• The exact meeting point is on Level 1 Turbine Hall
• If you can no longer attend, please cancel your ticket so that someone else can take your place.
