About this Event
Frith and Grith: Old Norse Boundary Setting
Keeping good boundaries is sometimes difficult, especially during the holidays. We are pulled in so many directions, hold on to old expectations, and meet in social settings with people we are not always comfortable around. What’s more, we are conditioned to be polarized, have an all-or-nothing mindset. Modern life, especially the “echo chamber” of the internet, tells us things and people are Either / Or. Our ancestors living in close ccommunity with one another and their animals knew that there are very few things in life which are “black and white.”
The Old Norse concepts of Truce, Peace, and Debt pair with the runes of reciprocity, community, and need in a beautiful and mythic way. The capitalized words are the actual names of mythic female powers in Old Norse cosmology poems, the Poetic Eddas and Sagas. What can our ancient ancestors teach us about breaking free from the false dichotomies of this modern world?
Bring a notebook and pencil. Photographs of teacher notes encouraged!
The tools Gården Gates and Frigg's Hand were designed by Kari Tauring over the course of thirty years and are foundational tools for her system of embodied Norse spiritual practice called Völva Stav.
