Current Exhibitions:
Maggie Michael: Root Chords, Earth to Sky
One of Washington, D.C.’s leading painters, Maggie Michael's lyrical works are a powerful reminder of the transformative potential of abstraction. Her paintings unfold as a series of capricious moments, processes, and forms, evoking the history and energy of American abstract expressionism. At the heart of Michael's experiential and experimental project lies an instinctive desire to perceive fresh perspectives, to generate novel, more expansive and illuminating impressions of the world while grappling with humanity and nature's profound duality—our capacity to both sustain and destroy. She also prioritizes painterly strategy, using form as a vehicle to convey material content. Her works flow like sequences, a confluence of the visual vocabulary she has developed over her 25-year career.
Margaret Morgan: Love Must Be Reinvented
Love Must Be Reinvented brings together three distinctive series of works on paper, linen and wall installations developed through her praxis of walks in Griffith Park and her fascination with pareidolia—the ability to draw patterns and meaning out of random objects. Such ruminations have fostered an artistic impulse to create with daily discoveries—found twigs evoking letters of the alphabet, nurturing quotes distilled from classic literature, films, plays, sage affirmations, adopted images, and ephemera. Morgan’s poetic tour de force stands in her dedication to finding value in the everyday to evoke a multi-sensorial stream of consciousness of language, touch, sight, and emotions.
