Friends of the Mobile Public Library Presents An Evening with Essie Chambers

Join us at the Ben May Main Library for An Evening with Essie Chambers!

A brief Friends of the Mobile Public Library Annual Meeting will be held at 6:00 p.m. followed by a discussion with author and award-winning producer Essie Chambers. Her critically acclaimed bestselling debut novel Swift River (Simon & Schuster) was the June Read With Jenna book club pick. Swift River was longlisted for the 2024 Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction The Center for Fiction First Novel Prize and the Barnes & Noble Book of the Year. It is the winner of the 2024 Barnes & Noble Discover Prize. 

Essie also started her career as a television executive and filmmaker. She was a producer on the Oscar-shortlisted documentary Descendant which was released by the Obamas’ Higher Ground production company and Netflix in 2022. Essie earned her MFA in creative writing from Columbia University and has received fellowships from MacDowell Vermont Studio Center and Baldwin for the Arts. 

After her talk there will be a question-and-answer session followed by a book signing. The Haunted Book Shop will provide book sales. We also welcome you to the reception in the Armbrecht Briskman Meeting Room.
