Friends of Durham Library present: Sarah Vowell at Library Fest 2026

Sarah Vowell is the New York Times bestselling author of seven nonfiction books on American history and culture. By examining the connections between the American past and present, she offers personal, often humorous accounts of American history as well as current events and politics. Her book, Lafayette in the Somewhat United States, explores both the ideas and the battles of the American Revolution, especially the patriot founders’ alliance with France as personified by the teenage volunteer in George Washington’s army, the Marquis de Lafayette.

This event is free to the public, but space is limited and registration is required. Doors will open at 5:15 pm and all registrants must be checked in no later than 5:50 pm, at which point wait list attendees will be invited to enter.

This year the United States of America commemorates the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. Library Fest will mark this moment with its 2026 theme "The Stories of U.S.", taking an opportunity to reflect on the nation’s past, honor the contributions of all people, and shape a better future for generations to come.
Ms. Vowell will be joined in conversation by Durham County Library Accessibility Services Coordinator Jennifer Jamsky as they discuss Ms. Vowell's works, tell the stories of some of the historical figures who have shaped our country, and discuss the importance of learning from our history as we vision and plan for our future. Following the conversation Ms. Vowell will take audience questions, and the event will conclude with a book signing.

The Regulator Bookshop will be on-site with copies of Ms. Vowell's books available for purchase.
