2024 Habit Cabernet Franc $30.94
Habit is a Santa Barbara–based project founded by Jeff Fischer. In 2007, while standing in a vineyard in Happy Canyon, he found the site that would ultimately shape his vision, and by 2017 Habit was fully realized. The cool climate of Happy Canyon, influenced by gentle Pacific breezes, has proven ideal for producing some of California’s most compelling Bordeaux varieties. The vineyards are managed by the Coastal Vineyard Care Association (CVCA), committed to sustainable, organic, and biodynamic farming practices.
This Cabernet Franc is sourced from Coquelicot Vineyard in the Santa Ynez Valley. It is fermented with 100% whole clusters in stainless steel using carbonic maceration and aged in neutral French oak. Only 268 cases were produced.
2021 Augur Wine Co Auspice $24.94
Augur Wine Co was born in 2014 after a surf session in Santa Cruz. Founder Maz Naba was sitting on the beach drinking Clos Cibonne Tibouren Rosé when he had the realization that he wanted to create California wines capturing oceanic minerality. He takes a natural approach to winemaking and exclusively sources from single-vineyard sites in cool coastal regions that are practicing or certified organic.
Auspice is 100% Cabernet Franc from the biodynamically farmed Parvenah Vineyard in Paso Robles. The wine undergoes partial carbonic maceration and comes in at just 11.9% alcohol. In addition to Augur, Maz runs the wine program at Osito in San Francisco and has consulted for numerous Michelin-starred restaurants.
2018 Weingut Brand Pur Cabernet Franc $44.94
Weingut Brand is run by brothers Daniel and Jonas Brand, the fifth generation of their family to farm vines in the northern Pfalz. This cooler, limestone-rich area is quieter and more agricultural than the more famous southern Pfalz, but the Brand brothers are drawing attention to its potential through organic farming and natural winemaking.
Their Cabernet Franc, which they believe grows as successfully as Riesling in their soils, is only produced in vintages with sufficient quality and quantity for a standalone bottling. “Pur” indicates zero added sulfur. The wine is 12% alcohol with just 0.5 grams per liter of residual sugar, offering a vibrant and unadorned expression of the grape.
2020 Catherine & Pierre Breton Bourgueil Les Perrières $51.94
Catherine and Pierre Breton founded their winery in 1982 and have become leaders in natural winemaking in the Loire Valley. They converted to organic and biodynamic farming in 1990 and produced their first wine without added sulfur in 1994. Their philosophy centers on minimal intervention, native yeasts, and little to no sulfur additions.
Les Perrières is their flagship Cabernet Franc, sourced from 70-year-old vines planted in sandy clay and limestone soils. The wine is aged for 24 months in barrique and is considered the estate’s finest bottling.
2018 Charles Joguet Chinon Cuvée de la Cure $39.94
Charles Joguet is a historic and highly regarded producer in Chinon in the Loire Valley. Originally, the family sold their grapes to négociants, as was customary at the time. In 1957, Charles left a career in art to take over the estate and began bottling under the family name. He rejected the idea of blending parcels, believing the distinct soils deserved individual expression, and became a pioneer of single-vineyard Chinon bottlings.
Cuvée de la Cure comes from two parcels, Clos de la Cure and Clos de la Chapelle, and is aged for 12 months in three- to four-year-old barrels.
2019 Piaggia Poggio de’Colli Cabernet Franc $54.94
Piaggia was established in the 1970s by Mauro Vannucci in the Carmignano DOC of Tuscany. Convinced that the area’s sun exposure and permeable clay soils could produce exceptional wines, he built the estate with a focus on quality and precision. Today, it is run by his daughter Silvia.
Poggio de’Colli is 100% Cabernet Franc grown on galestro soils typical of Tuscany. The grapes are vinified in open wooden fermenters using native yeasts and aged in French oak barriques, resulting in a structured yet refined expression of the variety.
