Freshkills Park: Essentials of Kayaking Class

Join the Freshkills Park Alliance for this Essentials of Kayaking Class, which will provide paddlers with the basic skills necessary to become a more confident kayaker!

Learn how to kayak with Freshkills Park kayak instructors for a 2 hour class. Our experienced staff will teach you all the essentials necessary to kayak our tidal water creeks: how to get outfitted, maneuver on-water effectively and efficiently, rescue yourself, and navigate the the creek water.

• Lifejacket, paddle, sea kayak or recreation kayak
• Restrooms
• Expert instructor who teaches and guides paddlers on Freshkills Park waterways

• Shoes that can get wet
• Quick-dry athletic clothes
• Water bottle and energy snack
• Change of clothes for afterwards

• Ages 18+
• 225 lb maximum
• Must be able to do 10 push-ups or10 squats

Your ticket admits 1 car and 1 person. Due to ongoing construction at the Park, all participants must provide their own car that will stay on-site the whole time. Participants may not use a bicycle, taxi or ride-share service.

Location provided with confirmation email: We will meet and caravan onto the Freshkills Park site together.

Plan Ahead: Wear sturdy shoes that you don’t mind getting wet or muddy and clothes that can get wet. Please also bring water and sunblock. Kayaks and life jackets will be provided. You will be asked to sign an activity waiver before participating in the program. Do not attend if you are sick or have been exposed to COVID-19
