About this Event

Fresh Roots: Before Sunset Fundraiser IN PERSON on the David Thompson Schoolyard Farm -- JULY 7th, 2022, 4:30-7:30 pm

Once again we are mixing things up for our biggest fundraiser of the year. We aren't quite ready for a sit-down long table dinner with hundreds of people but mingling outdoors at the schoolyard farm on a balmy late afternoon/evening sounds just right!

Come eat, drink, connect, listen to live music, try out some farm-based education activities and take in the beauty of a schoolyard farm in all its summer splendour. All funds generated from the event provide critical funds for our farm-based learning for kids and youth across Metro Vancouver!

On Thursday, July 7th we'll celebrate together with elegant small plates and a grazing table composed of locally produced ingredients and the best of the season's local harvest, local wine, beer and non-alcoholic beverages and some sweet treats to finish off the evening.

About the Event

Each ticket includes a wide selection of tasting plates and a grazing table featuring lovingly prepared meat, seafood and vegetable-based dishes created by Chef TJ Conwi of Ono Vancouver and his team and Sirius Food Truck and an extra-special sustainable seafood creation by Chef Robert Clark, Chief Culinary Officer at Organic Ocean, member of Order of Canada, founder of The BC Spot Prawn Festival amongst many other accolades. All capped off with sweet treats from Earnest Ice Cream and Kafka's Coffee.

A singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Parton co-founded the band in the late nineties with Jolie Holland. In 2017, Parton and Holland reunited and released Wildflower Blues, an album that wove together influences spanning jazz, blues, country, folk, rock, experimental, and the great wide history of American song, into their own kind of soul music.

Chef TJ Conwi

TJ has a passion for Modern West Coast cuisine. Using Vancouver’s many cultural influences and local ingredients to be able to create unique flavours. His culinary curiosity began with his roots in the Philippines and has taken him as far away as kitchens in Taiwan and Chile. Organic, local and sustainable ingredients are the highlight of his dishes.

After training under French chefs at the Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts, TJ honed his skills at The Arbutus Club and worked his way up in the hotel industry, most recently as executive chef at Delta Hotels Vancouver Downtown Suites by Marriott. He was an integral member of the Coast Coal Harbour Hotel’s opening team before the 2010 Winter Olympics. TJ has executed hotel functions of up to 600 people and as well as elaborate galas for the Japanese, Filipino and French Consulate.

He now owns and operates www.onovancouver.com, a kitchen consulting company that helps small to medium-scale business food programs. Clients range from breweries and local chain restaurants to startups and charities providing community meals in the Downtown Eastside and the downtown core.

ONO’S COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

As COVID-19 began to impact restaurants and not-for-profit organizations, Ono turned restaurant and restaurant supplier food stock into meals for laid-off hospitality workers. Then, through the City of Vancouver’s COVID-19 Emergency Operations Centre, Ono now supplies 2,200 meals a week to Health Initiatives for Men, Aboriginal Mothers Centre Society, Watari Counselling and Support Service Society, A Loving Spoonful, and YWCA Crabtree Corner.

Another community endeavour is LunchLAB, an in-school program that shows kids how to grow and prepare food. When in-class instruction stopped, the partners — Fresh Roots Urban Farm Society, Growing Chefs, Vancouver School Board, and Ono Vancouver — quickly pivoted to provide more than 5,500 meals a week to hundreds of families that relied on school meals and were struggling to put food on the table due to COVID-19.
