French Impressions transports the candid capture of the 19th century art movement to the orchestral stage on Saturday, March 1!
🎶 This all French program opens with the cheerful and playful "Overture No. 2" by Louise Farrenc, one of few prominent female composers in the 1800’s. Following, the concert dives into the tempest in Claude Debussy’s "La mer", with a sonic landscape that is unparalleled in depicting both the serenity and chaotic tumult of The Sea. After intermission, LexPhil is joined by the resounding voices of The Lexington Singers for Francis Poulenc’s "Gloria", featuring soprano soloist, Jessica Bayne. One of Poulenc's most celebrated works, this beautiful and jovial setting of the Gloria text from the mass, is regal and poignantly beautiful, and even has a movement that Poulenc says was inspired by monks playing soccer. Then, the steadfast snare drum in Maurice Ravel’s "Boléro" brings the concert to a boisterous finale.
