Freedom to Build is a Black History Month event exploring how Black homeowners can use ADUs and new AI tools to build housing.
About this Event

What if the future of housing in Milwaukee is built by the people who already live here?

This Black History Month event explores how Accessory Dwelling Units (aka Granny flat or carriage house) and AI-powered tools can help Black homeowners become builders of housing in their own neighborhoods without displacement, speculation, or outside developers. Many Black households in Milwaukee already live in ADU-eligible neighborhoods and hold significant home equity. Yet ADUs remain misunderstood, and housing policy often feels distant or threatening. This event bridges that gap. We’ll show clearly and practically how homeowners can use incremental development to support family, create rental income, and stay rooted in place.

What you'll Experience

This is a hands-on, interactive event, not a lecture.

  • A brief history on Black architecture in Milwaukee
  • Live AI + Zoning Demo
Enter your address and instantly see whether an ADU is allowed on your lot—in plain English. Visualize what it could look like and take home a simple feasibility summary.
  • Community Resource Stations
Connect with trusted local organizations offering guidance on homeownership, financing, energy efficiency, and housing support.
  • Tangible Takeaways
Visual examples, diagrams, and physical models to make housing concepts real and accessible.

Who You’ll Hear From

  • Nicholas Hans Robinson, A Milwaukee-based architect with experience designing and adapting ADUs for local lots, codes, and intergenerational living
  • Tarik Moody, An AI developer and Radio Milwaukee host demonstrating a plain-language tool that shows what housing is allowed on your property and what it could look like

Who Should Attend

  • Homeowners and long-term residents
  • Families interested in aging in place or housing relatives
  • Homeowners curious about rental income or added space
  • Community members concerned about displacement
  • Anyone interested in the future of housing in Milwaukee

No technical background required.
