As the nation prepares to celebrate 250 years of independence, there is a story that must be told—one that is too often overlooked, undervalued, and increasingly under threat. From the founding of the republic to the present day, Black Philadelphians have been central to the building of this city, this commonwealth, and this country. Their contributions to science, politics, the arts, faith, education, and community are woven into every block and boulevard of Philadelphia. The Semiquincentennial is a moment to reclaim and celebrate that legacy—on our own terms.
