Join us for our Feldenkrais workshop -
Freedom for your Neck and Shoulders on Sunday 28 April.
The muscles of your neck and shoulders are so good at building up tension, aren't they? ?
We don't even notice that space between our shoulders and ears is getting smaller and shorter each time we hold our breath, worry, get angry or focus intently on doing something with our hands, clench our jaw, focus on the screen, ... the list is simply endless. Just imagine doing some of these things and notice what happens to your shoulders, to the muscles in your neck and the position of your head.
And let's be honest, stretching out your neck and shoulders doesn't really help. You might feel a momentary relief or feel good about doing something, but it just doesn’t last.
A good massage on the shoulders and neck feels good and relaxing and can offer a noticeable relief and a sense of lightness. There are many different hands-on therapies that offer manipulation that changes the muscle tone.
But how can we do this ourselves and - more importantly - how can we minimise unnecessary tension building up in the first place?
The first and most important thing is to become aware of it. Often, we don't even know there is tension until we feel discomfort or pain.

In this workshop we will address this issue by doing two Awareness Through Movement lessons focusing on the neck and shoulder area.
We will take the time to slow down, to listen and pay attention so that we can notice the quality of each movement and our habitual ways and responses to it.
You will be guided to observe and investigate questions including:
Is this movement easy and smooth?
Do you like the way it feels?
Do you have to hold on to one part of your body in order to move another?
Do you need to make all that effort to carry on the movement?
Are you holding your breath? (hint: this is a big contributor to neck and shoulder tension)
In the words of Moshe Feldenkrais:
"If you know what you are doing, you can do what you want."
Once you are aware of the unnecessary exertion, you can practice moving with less effort. In addition, you might also need to reduce the range in order to find ease, make connections and distribute the effort more evenly. In the Feldenkrais Method we refer to this as doing "less than you can", which is not easy for many of us.
The positive changes will happen through this mindful somatic awareness, curiosity and experimentation with a variety of possible movements that might have been forgotten.
The more you pay attention to yourself in this way, the more you will also attend to yourself in your daily life and gradually change the unhelpful habits into habits that serve you better.
The lessons are designed to integrate the use of our shoulders and arms with the engagement of our spine and ribs thus improving the carriage of our head and the overall articulation and functioning of ourselves.
