July 4th Freedom Fest to celebrate nation’s 250th with readings, food trucks, music and more ...
The debut Freedom Fest was so popular last year that it is returning again this July 4. The grassroots festival will celebrate the Declaration of Independence while providing an entertaining outing in Lawrence on Independence Day.
The July 4th Freedom Fest will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, July 4, on the east side of South Park, near 11th and Massachusetts.
The highlight of the free festival will be a program providing an overview of the nation’s progress in the areas of civil rights, women’s rights and voting rights, while recognizing the much-needed work that still lies ahead.
Amii Castle, a University of Kansas law professor, will act as emcee for the program and also talk about the proposed amendments to change the Kansas Constitution that will be on the August and November ballots.
The program will be preceded at 10:45 a.m. by the PerSisters, a group of Lawrence women who sing protest songs. Other musical entertainment will include performances by Mike Yoder and Terry Moore, Ardys Ramberg, Linda Sue Clark and Byron James.
Natalie Weiss will read “The Hill We Climb,” a poem by awarding-winning writer and activist Amanda Gorman. ASL/English interpretation will be provided.
Kid-friendly activities will be available throughout the festival, including face painting, balloons, big bubbles, an art table, sidewalk chalk, corn hole, fishing and giant bowling and Jenga. Onsite food trucks include J.B.’s Tacos and Main St. Scoops and Sweets. An information fair will feature tabling by social justice and other community organizations.
Sponsors for the July 4th Freedom Fest include Indivisible Lawrence; League of Women Voters of Lawrence-Douglas County; Douglas County Democratic Party; Women For Kansas; Still We Rise; Loud Light; Kansas AFL-CIO; Douglas County Community Bail Fund; Lawrence Jewish Community Congregation; Lawrence Democratic Socialists of America; Kansas for All; Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Lawrence; Veterans for Peace (Kansas City Chapter 97); and KU Young Democrats.
