What A fleet of six mobile museums, known as "Freedom Trucks," are traveling throughout 2026, bringing the story of American independence to students, families, and citizens in every corner of our country and near many military communities. With interactive and inspiring content for visitors of all ages, the exhibits tell the extraordinary story of how 13 colonies declared independence, defeated the greatest empire in the world and secured American sovereignty 250 years ago. With engaging elements such as quizzes, a kiosk to sign your name digitally to the Declaration of Independence and a wall of 50 American heroes, these exhibits celebrate the remarkable achievements that 250 years have made possible. The national Freedom 250 initiative is a historic, once-in-a-generation opportunity to reflect on the founding principles of our country while rallying communities around the values that built our country and the American Dream. While every Freedom 250 event is unique, it is also part of a national movement to celebrate America and set the tone for our next 250 years.
Inside the Freedom Truck, you'll find an immersive mobile museum experience that brings the story of American independence to life. Visitors are greeted by an AI-powered George Washington portrait that speaks, and you can take a "Loyalist or Patriot?" quiz to test your perspective.
The exhibit also features a digital copy of the Declaration of Independence that you can sign, along with displays detailing the battles for independence and the long journey to fulfill the promise of the Declaration. The experience concludes with a wall honoring 50 American heroes, ranging from figures like Rosa Parks and Mark Twain to the Wright Brothers and Aretha Franklin.

Why: The United States is approaching the 250th anniversary of its founding, because 2026 marks 250 years since the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. That document formally announced that the thirteen American colonies were separating from Great Britain and establishing a new nation based on principles like self-government, individual rights, and equality (at least as they were understood at the time). So, the 250th celebration isn’t about when every part of the country was settled or incorporated (for example, Rockford came much later). It’s about the moment the United States officially defined itself as an independent nation.
