Advanced registration is required so we can ship your materials to use and keep if you are attending via zoom or have them in the gallery for you to use and take home. Feel free to invite family members or friends but please register here by September 17th so we know what to order and have time to ship.Hand stitching can be a form of active meditation which can reduce stress, can support us in relaxation, can help us more deeply connect with our sensory experience and the present moment, and most importantly, can be fun! In this therapeutic workshop, participants will learn basic stitching techniques, see examples of slow stitching like Japanese Sashiko and Boro, and Indian Kantha, and be guided in creating an improvisational stitching project. We’ll use needle and thread to doodle on fabric, embracing playfulness and spontaneity, and creating a space for a calming practice that focuses more on the stitching process itself than on aiming for a perfect final product.
This hybrid workshop will take place at Aplomb Gallery in Dover, NH, and online via Zoom. All necessary art materials will be provided to participants ahead of time, however, participants may want to bring some scraps of fabric with them if they have some on hand for variety or personal significance.
No sewing experience is necessary/all skill levels are welcome.
This workshop will be facilitated by textile artist, board-certified art therapist, and licensed mental health counselor Lauren Leone (she/her), who works with art therapy participants in clinical and community-based settings in Massachusetts. Lauren is the editor of Craft in Art Therapy: Diverse Approaches to the Transformative Power of Craft Materials and Methods (Routledge) and her research interests include the unique therapeutic benefits of craft materials and media for art therapy practice and socially engaged craft practices. She explores themes of identity, connection, and communication through her textile art, and facilitates collaborative/community craft projects which focus on community healing and justice.
