OUTRAGE IN FRESNO: WICKEY TWOHANDS ARRESTED FOR STANDING ON A SIDEWALK!In October 2024, the Fresno Police Department arrested Wickey Twohands—an elderly Indigenous man—for simply standing on a sidewalk. His crime? Existing in public under the city’s cruel new ordinance 1021-01, which makes it illegal to sit, lie, sleep, or camp in a public place at any time. Under this law, "camping" includes something as basic as sitting or resting, and "public places" include sidewalks, streets, and alleyways—essentially criminalizing unhoused existence altogether.
THIS IS INHUMANE. THIS IS AN ATTACK ON OUR ELDERS. THIS IS AN ATTACK ON OUR COMMUNITY.
Wickey’s story is in the post below—watch it, listen to him, feel his pain. Hear firsthand how the city of Fresno has chosen to punish, rather than protect, one of its most vulnerable residents.
We need you to show up. We need you to stand against this injustice.
The city council sits beneath the words "IN GOD WE TRUST"—yet they have no problem incarcerating an elderly man, fully aware that jail could be a death sentence for him. How much of your tax dollars are being spent to put an Indigenous elder on trial for merely existing? Why does the Mayor of Fresno prioritize jailing unhoused elders of color over providing real solutions?
Is this an attempt to erase us? To make us disappear? Is history repeating itself right in front of our eyes?
We must not allow this city to continue erasing culture, humanity, and dignity. Stand up. Speak out. Fight back.
