Exploring our Struggles with Social Justice in STEM: Free Theatre of the Oppressed Workshops (Wednesdays at 7PM)
About this Event

*Edit* We will no longer have a session on September 7th. My grandmother passed, and I will be in the Carolinas to grieve with my family.

I've been studying Theatre of the Oppressed/Theatre for Living this past summer and would like to get some more practice. So, I'm offering free workshops while I work out what more formalized sessions would look like. Come be a part of my next arts-science experiment!

Workshops occur Wednesdays at 7PM at the Fallout Theater. Sign up for as many workshops as you like. Each one will be different, and the more you come to the more we can build to something bigger. Thank you for trusting me and trying out something new.

RSVPs let me know if we have enough people to do the work, so please remove yourself if you can no longer show. Looking forward to trying out some new theater forms with you!

Workshop Description

STEM is not currently a place of belonging for everyone, and overemphasis on objectivity and rationality may perpetuate this. That is, we might not be able to “science” our way out of oppressive systems. But art-based methods have the potential to disrupt and make visible injustice and cultivate a radical space for reclaiming, repairing, and reimagining science communication as an inclusive space. In this workshop, we will explore how Theatre of the Oppressed may offer healing potential for STEM spaces. Theatre of the Oppressed is a form of interactive theatre used in activism. It was developed by Augusto Boal and influenced by Paulo Freire’s Pedagogy of the Oppressed. This beginner-friendly workshop invites participants to collectively process our struggles with social justice emotionally, intellectually, and artistically through Image Theatre (a technique of Theatre of the Oppressed). Using the aesthetic, scholarly, and lived experience expertise of these participants, we will explore and make visible our current struggles in social justice in science spaces. By making and activating these images, we hope to create a platform for emergent insights into how to move from our current struggles to our collectively-imagined ideals.

What We Will Do:

The workshop will begin with games and exercises designed to introduce participants to one another, build trust in the room, and have participants begin using their bodies to make images. Then, we will divide into groups and collaboratively form images of our struggles with social justice in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The workshop will end with a brief performance in which the facilitator (Joker) will activate each of the images and invite the other participants into an embodied dialogue with each image.
