What was it like to be queen consort in the late eighteenth century? While the Bridgerton spin-off series has captured the imaginations of many, the person of Queen Charlotte and her position as consort to George III continues to attract the attention of scholars, too. This paper will explore the historical realities of queenship in the 1780s, including Charlotte's management of a household entirely separate from that of her husband and her cultivation of a devoted group of courtiers, who became significant sources of guidance and support when George III became seriously ill for the first time in 1789. The king's early control over Charlotte's situation helped to instill values of apolitical and moral propriety, but by the latter part of his reign (even before the Regency), she had realized a significant form of social authority at court through the appointments of both men and women to her bedchamber and the resulting development of networks among aristocratic courtier-families.
Amanda Westcott is a doctoral candidate in her final year of study at the University of Oxford (Keble College), supervised by Dr Hannah Smith. Her research focuses on court culture under George III in the late eighteenth century and considers the role of the court in supporting particular styles of kingship in this period. Amanda aims to begin a career in the heritage sector following the submission of her thesis in the autumn.
