In this talk, PhD student Shu Yang-Miyoshi will introduce the intricate way in which sound and material - even living things - can be translated into one another. Attendees will discover various approaches to 'hear' the cell. Additionally, he will briefly discuss AI (artificial intelligence) in music, and illustrate how large language models (LLMs) can be used to transform any information into Baroque-style music, including Bach.
Shu is an interdisciplinary researcher and artist based in Oxford. He focuses on the sonic characteristics of cells. As a final-year DPhil candidate, he works with the music technology cohort at the University of Sussex, collaborates with the Bentley Lab at the Crick Institute, and takes PhD exchange courses at Aalborg University in Denmark. He is a visiting doctoral student at Oxford on Bionanotechnology / Nanomedicine and holds a Machine Learning for Material Informatics certificate from MIT.
He has an MA in Textiles (Bio-inspired), a BSc in Biological Engineering, and a degree in Fashion Design. His artwork has been inspired by science, particularly biology and ecology.
