What is VBA?

Very Brief Advice is a 30-second conversation designed to be used opportunistically with someone who smokes. It’s quick, simple, and can be highly effective.

Why it matters:

• Delivered correctly, VBA can trigger a quit attempt—either immediately or by planting the seed for future change.
• Routine and repeated delivery to all smokers is key to success.
• Smoking is a chronic relapsing condition; VBA can empower those who have relapsed to try again.

Who is it for?

Training is available for frontline professionals and anyone working with the public in Buckinghamshire, including:

• Volunteers
• Community health champions
• Programme coordinators
• Community and faith organisations

VBA+ saves lives.

When delivered well and routinely, VBA+ has the power to save lives. It is recommended by the National Institute for Health & Care Excellence (NICE).
