FREE SCREENING OF THE FILM "IL SINDACO DEL RIONE SANITÀ"

Join us for an exciting new cycle of screenings of contemporary Italian films in the spaces of our Institute! From September to December 2024 we will screen 8 films in Italian with English subtitles by the best contemporary directors.

The next appointment will be Monday 21 October 2024 at 6pm for the screening of: ‘Il sindaco del rione sanità’ (2016), directed by Mario Martone.

The film will be screened in Italian with English subtitles and will be preceded by an analysis of the context and work of the director.

PLOT: The film tells the story of Antonio Barracano, a neighbourhood boss who rules Naples with his own justice, resolving conflicts and maintaining order through compromise and intimidation. When a young man, Rafiluccio, seeks revenge against his father, Barracano is forced to confront his own morality and his role as ‘judge’ of the neighbourhood. The film explores the fine line between justice and illegality, offering an intense reflection on power and responsibility. Adapted in a modern key from the play of the same name by Eduardo De Filippo.

THE DIRECTOR: Mario Martone is a Neapolitan director and screenwriter, known for his contributions to both theatre and cinema. He began his career in avantgarde theatre in the 1970s, founding the group “Falso Movimento,” and later brought his innovative vision to film with works like “Morte di un matematico napoletano” (1992). Martone is known for exploring Italian historical and cultural themes, such as in “Il giovane favoloso” (2014), a film about the poet Giacomo Leopardi. He has also directed operas and theatre adaptations, standing out for his ability to blend experimentation with tradition.
