Celebrated for his vibrant, interdisciplinary practice that weaves together Native American aesthetic and material traditions with contemporary themes, Gibson’s presentation coincides with the acquisition of his sculpture Untitled figure 2 2022, currently on display in Gallery 10.
In this work, Gibson works figuratively with materials used by Indigenous dancers in the making of dance regalia. Gibson describes his practice as a means to ‘expand the way people think about Indigeneity’ through imagining what Native American art would look like if colonial ‘disruptions hadn’t happened’. His work aims to broaden the ‘very narrow view of the full spectrum of a human being’ that is reflected in histories of Native American dispossession, bringing American First Nations visual culture into the contemporary globalised world.
Gibson’s visit to the National Gallery is supported by the American Friends of the National Gallery Visiting Creatives Program. This program builds on four decades of close cultural ties between the National Gallery and the United States of America and is designed to deepen the transformational impact of cross-cultural exchange between the two countries. The program brings influential American arts practitioners to Australia to engage with the national collection and the broader arts community.
First presented in 1983, the Annual Lecture supports the National Gallery’s mission to lead the national cultural agenda through art. Coinciding with the opening of the National Gallery in October 1982, the Annual Lecture invites leading art world thinkers to present new ideas in the field of art and art history.
Please arrive early to avoid disappointment.
