FREE HISTORICAL AND EDUCATIONAL TOUR: REDISCOVERING SOUTH LONDON MISSION (SLM)
Event overview
Join us for an exclusive journey through time with our interactive tour of the South London Mission (SLM)! Since its establishment in 1889, SLM has played an important role in Bermondsey and the surrounding neighbourhoods, offering support, sanctuary, and a space for innovation and transformation.
In collaboration with Doing Social, we are excited to host these historical tours as part of our project to reimagine and transform this community space.
Experience the legacy
Our guided tour offers a unique opportunity to step back in time as we explore the rich history of SLM at 256 Bermondsey Street. As you walk through the building, you’ll learn about stories of resilience, community spirit, and innovation that have shaped SLM over the decades. From its humble beginnings to its impact on the community today, you’ll gain a new perspective on this historical gem.
What to expect
- Interactive tour: Reconnect with the past through stories, photos, and artefacts that bring the history of SLM to life and invoke old memories.
- Explore key areas: Visit significant rooms within the building, including the attic and basement (optional), and discover their historical importance.
- Learn about today’s SLM: Discover the building's current offerings, its potential, and the broad impact of SLM locally and beyond.
- Share your insights: Participate in a discussion session where you can share your thoughts and ideas on how we can transform the space for future use.
Light refreshments will be served before the event starts. We recommend arriving at least 15 minutes ahead of the scheduled start time as the tour will start promptly at 1pm or 6pm depending on the event you've chosen. Refreshments will also be served after the tour during the discussion session.
