Program & program notes:
String duos for viola d’amore and cello
by “Anon”
These Duos are from a collection of 48 duos for Viola d’amore and Violoncello from Manuscript PNM A 199 in the Czech Museum of Music and have been edited and transcribed by Thomas Georgi. Except for one, all of the duos are anonymous. Though it is familiar to us now, the concept of intellectual property was not prevalent in the 18th century or supported by the law, so it was not unusual for composers to leave off their name, as is the case with these duos, but from the general style and certain compositional techniques, it can be deduced they are from the 18th century, Classical Period of music, as are composers such as Mozart and Haydn. They range in difficulty from simple, student level pieces to the more complex and difficult. The transcription of these duos has added greatly to the repertoire for viola d’amore and are a welcome addition to the pieces that can be performed with just two players, and without needing to add keyboard.
Performer Bios:
In addition to the viola d’amore, Adriana Zoppo performs on violin, viola, baroque violin and baroque viola. Director/Curator of the Glendale Noon Concerts’ early music sub-series Adriana, with Ergo Musica, is heard there frequently. Previously a member of the Carmel Bach Festival, she plays with the original instrument ensembles Musica Angelica Baroque Orchestra, Los Angeles Baroque Players, Bach Collegium San Diego and the Corona del Mar Baroque Festival, where she has appeared as viola d'amore soloist. She has also played regularly with the Santa Barbara, New West, Pacific, Long Beach and Pasadena Symphonies, the St. Matthew Chamber Orchestra and other local ensembles. Adriana plays for film, TV, solo artist recordings and live shows of all musical styles and genres.
Morgan Little, cellist and historical performance enthusiast from Los Angeles, developed a passion for historical performance during studies at DePaul University in Chicago. Since graduating from The Juilliard School with an MFA in Historical Performance, Morgan has performed internationally at Festival Dans les Jardins de William Christie, on tour with Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra in the U.K and Amsterdam, and has been invited to perform with Oregon Bach Festival, Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra and other local historical performance ensembles. Morgan was most recently found performing under the baton of Richard Egarr with Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra and will be joining them for their 2023-2024 season to play the Brandenburg concertos, Mendelssohn and Beethoven, and other works in NYC, San Francisco, and Berkeley.
