About this Event
Join us for an evening of classical music featuring The Horizon Trio, a group of talented young musicians from Tucson!
The Horizon Trio is comprised of violinist Josh Thai, cellist Mei-Mei Turner and pianist Hannah Lui. The trio has performed in masterclasses with Catherine Kautsky and recently placed first in the Civic Orchestra of Tucson Young Artists’ Chamber Music Competition. All native Tucsonans, Thai, Turner, and Lui have participated in the Tucson Philharmonic Youth Orchestra and developed a strong musical connection to their community through the Rocky Ridge Music Center and the Southwest Strings Quartet Workshop. The Horizon Trio has collaborated since 2021 and currently serves as the trio-in-residence of Quest for Education and Arts, a non-profit community learning center based in Tucson.
Josh Thai, 18, has been studying violin since the age of seven. A student of Katherine McLin at Arizona State University, Josh made his solo orchestral debut at the age of 11 with the Arizona Symphonic Winds. He has since been a soloist with many other orchestras including the Southern Arizona Symphony Orchestra, and the Tucson Philharmonia Youth Orchestra. He has served as concertmaster of various community and festival orchestras. Josh is currently a graduating senior and plans to attend Bard College in the fall to continue his music education.
Mei-Mei Turner, 17, began studying the cello at the age of six, under the teaching of Mary Beth Tyndall. She now attends Thomas Landschoot’s studio at ASU. As a classically trained musician, she has performed at Rocky Ridge Music Camp, Arizona All State Festival, and in the Civic Orchestra of Tucson and TSO Young Artists’ Competitions. Mei-Mei is a junior at University High School in Tucson and enjoys dance, gymnastics, and rock climbing in her spare time.
Hannah Lui is an 18-year-old native of Tucson, Arizona. She began her studies at the age of four and fell in love with the piano, making her orchestral debut with the Tucson Symphony Orchestra in 2018. She has performed at various festivals and programs across the country, including Rocky Ridge Music Camp and Interlochen Arts Camp, studying with Michael Coonrod, Derek Polischuk, and Esther Wang over the years. She has won recognition through the Charleston International Music Competition, ASMTA James R. Anthony Honors Recital, Tucson Symphony Orchestra Young Artist Competition, and the Steinway/Avanti Future Stars Piano Competition. Hannah is currently a senior at University High School and plans to attend Columbia University in the fall.
