About the artist:
In 2023, Kris Goodie earned a B.A. in Art Practice from UC Berkeley, and received the Wendy Sussman Memorial Award for excellence in painting. Kris Goodie is a Vallejo-based portrait artist working primarily in watercolor. Their work has been exhibited throughout the San Francisco Bay Area.
What the artist has to say:
-Kris Goodie: "My exhibition at Etcetera Wine Bar "Between Us" explores the space that exists between people - between artist and sitter, sitter and viewer, and the many ways we attempt to understand one another.
My work centers on portraiture as a means of connection. While I strive to capture a recognizable likeness, I am equally interested in the emotional presence of the sitter. I search for what exists beneath the surface: vulnerability, desire, and the deeply human need to be seen.
My own relationship to identity has deeply influenced who I connect with and choose to paint. This body of work primarily features members of the LGBTQ+ community, particularly gender non-conforming individuals. I am drawn to people who exist outside of prescribed expectations and who have questioned or reshaped themselves in search of alignment between their inner and outer worlds. More broadly, I am interested in the ways people carry hidden histories and rich interior lives.
My process begins with photographing my sitters, searching for fleeting expressions that feel honest and revealing. I then translate those moments through watercolor, a medium that has been central to my practice for most of my life. Watercolor mirrors the way I experience human connection: layered, delicate, and difficult to predict. Its permanence demands presence and trust, allowing each portrait to emerge through a balance of control and surrender.
These paintings are an invitation to slow down and spend time with another person. To look closely. To notice. To consider what it means to be seen, and what might happen in the space between us. I look forward to seeing you on Tuesday, July 7th at 5 pm"
