About this Event
Considerations for Seating & Mobility in Long-term Care
Around the world, the number of people in need of long-term care (LTC) services continues to grow. This can encompass a young client with several chronic conditions residing in a LTC facility to the personal care and support for a senior living at home. Meeting the out-of-bed needs of the LTC population can present some significant challenges. Appropriate mobility for the patient/resident who is bariatric or dependent for weight-shift repositioning often requires more non-generic chairs. Some wheeled mobility devices can be configured with features such as extremely low seat to floor heights or reversed wheel configurations which can increase mobility and the safety of the user.
Consumers are often focused on comfort and function while long term care and residential facilities may prioritize managing clients’ mobility and safety within the legal requirements. Finding potential solutions that meet the needs of all stakeholders can be difficult. Seating design can help with prevention of falls and pressure injuries. Improved seating comfort can lower incidence of negative responsive behaviors. This presentation will review the most common postural & functional seating and mobility challenges for users of wheeled mobility in LTC settings. A variety of solutions will be presented using case studies and mocked up examples.
Objectives
At the end of this session, attendees with be able to:
1. list a minimum of 2 postural seating challenges which commonly occur within the LTC wheeled mobility user population.
2. list a minimum of 3 physiological or functional negative effects of poor seated posture within the LTC wheeled mobility population.
3. describe 2 or more interventions with seating equipment and/or wheelchair configuration which may improve the postural seated position and/or physiological system function for LTC wheeled mobility population.
