The Violet Hours are known in the blues-Americana scene for their soul-stirring sound and evocative storytelling. Fronted by Preston-based singer-songwriter Helen May, alongside the accomplished guitar work of Chris Preston, the band crafts fresh takes on blues and country rock while carving out a signature style all their own.
Formed in 2023, the band share a love of expressive melodies and lyric-driven storytelling. Helen’s background in journalism shapes the vivid, emotionally resonant lyrics at the heart of their songs, while Chris brings a depth of experience and tone to the sound.
Their latest EP, The 3 Colours of Heartbreak, now streaming on all major platforms, features three intimate and powerful tracks—“Where Were You,” “Let It Burn,” and “Sorry”—each offering a different take on heartbreak and resilience. Whether performing as a close-knit core or joined by standout musicians from across the UK scene to deliver a full band show, The Violet Hours deliver emotionally charged sets that resonate. Back in 2022, Helen and Chris kept crossing musical paths in the North West scene—Helen fronting her own band and lending her voice to other projects, Chris formerly playing slide and lead guitar with Slack Alice. They shared a love for blues, Americana, and songs that actually mean something.
What started as a few casual rehearsals turned into a project they mutually wanted to pursue. By early 2023, The Violet Hours was born.
They have already made an impression at venues and festivals across the country, including Colne Blues (Great British Rhythm & Blues Festival), and Diseworth Blues who describe them as being ‘one of the hottest acts on the circuit’.
